Fattoria Antica Forconia

Working farm agriturismo just outside L'Aquila, serving home-cooked meals and welcoming families with children and pets.

About

We're just beyond L'Aquila, where the countryside begins and Gran Sasso stays in view. This is a real working farm with animals to see and get to know, designed with families and children in mind. At the table you eat what comes from our land, cooked simply the way it's done here. Four-legged friends are welcome. A quiet base for those wanting to explore the city and the mountains around it.

We enjoyed both the accommodation and the food; my personal assessment is a balance between the two. We stayed for six nights in a cottage, simply furnished but clean and equipped with almost everything you need. The small flaws are in the details: a television without a remote control, no kitchen linens, not even a dishcloth, no hangers for clothes or towels, the closet consisted of a clothes rail with hangers and shelves for towels. The cookware was cheap and quite damaged, even a food container with food residue. Breakfast was served in a basket, pretty to look at but made up of inexpensive ingredients, including a homemade tart with a good shortcrust pastry, but ruined by a discount store jam. We left it all, as well as the juice and yogurt. In the following days, we preferred to get some things ourselves, even milk. We saved some homemade biscuits and jam, but at a farmhouse you expect something more refined. We were worried about the lunch we'd booked for Easter Monday because we had guests, but I have to say the food was on a whole new level and enhanced the overall experience. They served appetizers with good cold cuts and cheeses; the only negative was the rustic tarts, which were completely stale, evidently prepared for Easter Sunday. This was followed by two first courses, both very good, with a possible second course, which we didn't take advantage of given the general abundance. For the second course, they served a braised cheek, tasty and tender, and for me, a lamb with egg, which I took away because I was already quite full. I was particularly struck by a salad from their garden, which reminded me of the flavors of my childhood. The dessert, too, was a bit strong but good; the coffee was terrible. The service was friendly and efficient. The manager, Mario, was a somewhat atypical person: friendly and affable in person, but almost absent in remote communication, right from the first emails about the reservation, where I had to repeatedly push for a response. Upon leaving, I sent a message with thanks and greetings, which was viewed but went unanswered, not even a hello... The experience was overall decent, but some aspects need work. The accommodation is fine for two or three days, but for longer stays, you have to adapt.

A wonderful experience! We went to Trattoria Antica Forconia for a birthday party with a group of 13. The welcome was warm and friendly from the start, immediately setting the tone for a special experience. Signora Mara's cooking surprised and delighted us all, demonstrating attention to detail, professionalism, and passion in preparing unique and truly delicious dishes. This trattoria's cuisine is based on a zero-kilometer agriculture concept, where ingredients are sourced from their own garden, grown with dedication and using an organic and natural approach. The service was excellent and very attentive, making for a fun and unique experience. I highly recommend it!
