Vasto boasts some of Abruzzo's finest beaches, and most of them are free to access. This is far from guaranteed along the Adriatic coast, where equipped beach clubs often dominate the shoreline. The stretch around Vasto breaks that pattern. Those who know where to look find sandy beaches, rocky coves, and wild stretches reachable on foot or by bike along the coastal cycle path.
This is part of our complete guide to Abruzzo's beaches and seaside spots.
Punta Penna and the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve
Punta Penna is the most striking free beach in the Vasto area. A long sandy shore backed by the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve, it's reached on foot via a path through Mediterranean scrubland. The water is clear, the seabed slopes gently, and the walk from the entrance keeps most visitors away from the best sections.
For even wilder stretches, Motta Grossa and the coastline along Vasto's cycle path offer rocky beaches that are barely accessible by car. Reach them by bike or on foot via the Adriatic cycle route. Locals are almost the only ones who venture here.
Free beaches at Vasto Marina
Those seeking a free beach with nearby facilities have solid options at Vasto Marina, the beach resort below the old town.
The former Bussola area has a sandy free beach right on the water, with bars and restaurants just steps away. It's ideal if you want to swim then grab food or a drink without moving far. A middle ground between wild beach and organized resort.
Near the Sirenetta, another free beach draws a local crowd. At low tide, you can wade out to an old trabocco, the traditional wooden fishing structure typical of this coast. A short walk that gives a real sense of Abruzzo's coastal character without needing to rent a boat.
The cycle path as your access key
The coastal bike path running along Vasto's shore is one of the best ways to explore the area's free beaches. Many rocky coves have no road access and can only be reached by stopping along the cycle path and walking down to the sea.
The payoff is that these rocky beaches, accessible only on foot from the path, stay nearly empty even in August. They're not for those seeking fine sand, but for swimming and snorkeling over rocky seabeds with crystal water, they rank among the coast's best.
Bikes are available to rent at Vasto Marina and at several points along the cycle path.
Practical tips
For beaches in the Punta Aderci Reserve, bring everything from home; there are no bars or beach umbrellas. Vasto Marina is the opposite; you're in the thick of the resort with everything within arm's reach.
The rocky beaches along the cycle path need proper footwear for scrambling over rocks; flip-flops won't cut it.
June and September are ideal; the sea is warm, free beaches are uncrowded compared to July and August, and the experience feels less hectic.
